The U. S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to men trying to buy prescription drugs online from online pharmacies that sell drugs containing sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra and similar prescription medications.
A group of men from the U. that are looking for an easy way to get a prescription filled online has just reached out to the FDA and is offering a warning to men from that online pharmacy: It's illegal to sell prescription drugs without a valid prescription.
"Sildenafil is a prescription medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction, and in many instances, it's sold without a prescription," said Eli Lilly & Co. spokesman John Leavitt. "As a general rule, you can't get a prescription from a legitimate, licensed medical professional."
Men who are in the US who are currently buying drugs from online pharmacy sites can expect to pay $5,000 to $10,000 for a 30-day supply of the drug, according to a new analysis by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. The company says the drugs are not intended for medical use.
The drugs are sold online without a prescription by men who may have had little experience with the drugs before. The FDA issued a warning to men who buy drugs online from an online pharmacy called LegitScript last year.
"We believe this is an unacceptable practice in the pharmaceutical industry and we would urge any men who buy prescription drugs online to take the time to learn more about the risks involved with using this medication online," said FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.
Levitra is a generic form of Viagra, a brand name for sildenafil, which was approved by the FDA in March 1998.
The FDA says that the pills are not intended for use by anyone under the age of 18 but that the FDA is concerned about the safety of the drugs.
"The FDA has stated that the safety and efficacy of sildenafil in people under the age of 18 are not known and the safety and efficacy of the medications is unknown," said FDA Commissioner Richard M. Celebrex.
The FDA has issued several warnings to men who buy prescription drugs online, including that they can take the medications if prescribed by a licensed physician and that they should be using the drugs at the same time as a daily pill.
Men who have a prescription for Viagra or sildenafil may be able to purchase the pills without a prescription at a pharmacy with a membership that doesn't require a prescription, according to the FDA.
Levitra was introduced in 1998 and has been available to consumers since it was introduced. However, the drug is not FDA-approved for use by anyone under the age of 18.
